The Gravitational Pull of Social Media

Gavin Perrett

Like attracts like!

We are the sum of the 5 people that we spend most of our time with……..

Social media certainly knows this.

Every time I log onto Facebook or Linkedin I’m presented with “People I may know” who are of course friends of my existing contact base and the clever algorithms are enticing me to connect with all of these lovely like-minded people.

Being a curious soul from time to time I visit the profiles of those for whom I feel an affinity or connection.

What is it about a social media profile that attracts us?

Is it the smile on the profile picture?

Is it the mutual friends that offer reassurance of shared values?

Perhaps it's the events that we can see that they attend where there is a shared interest……..

From time to time I will send a message to a like-minded soul and suggest meeting for a coffee.

I also think it’s nice to receive a message from somebody who has a connection with you that you haven't met before.

It’s exciting to explore where the synergies lie and where mutual business or personal development opportunities emerge off the back of such connections.

I’m going to set myself a target of connecting with one new person per month off the back of social media attraction and remain open-minded about where it might lead.

I’d be interested to hear how any of you get on adopting a similar approach……….
