Getting Started with Meditation

Many people struggle with the whole concept of meditation. Some try to do it and give up, thinking they might be doing it wrong.

Others might think it’s a bit cultish or a massive waste of time, energy and effort.

The best way to get more done each day is by getting started with meditation for at least 10 minutes before your day starts

Benefits of Getting Started with Meditation 

 Getting started with meditation helps reduce stress or anxiety, there is a more practical incentive to start meditating each day.

The time we invest in getting started with meditation and mindfulness returns to us many times over.  

Through meditation, we become more creative... more productive... more vital and generally luckier and happier in life and in business. 

Why Is Getting Started With Meditation Important? 


Essentially it is down to understanding our breath.

Because the human mind can only experience one thought at a time,  we find ourselves preoccupied with the past or fretting about the future, and when this happens we lose focus on the present.  

This means that we lose focus on what we should be working on.  Getting started with meditation helps us in getting that focus back.

The practice of mindfulness meditation does not so much teach us how to have no thoughts at all but helps us to form a new relationship with our thoughts.

How To Be Getting Started With Meditation 

1. Change Something Small: The First Step of Getting Started With Meditation 

To start a new practice in the mornings creates a win-win situation. For instance, first thing in the morning, instead of checking emails or social media, use your phone or tablet to listen to a guided meditation or some ambient music instead.

If you happen to be awake in the middle of the night, you can use a meditation to get you back to sleep too.

2. The Inspirational Breath

Our breath quite literally is the powerhouse behind our inspiration and ideas.  The neurons in our brain are fed by each breath we take.  Thus taking control of our breathing is important to consider while getting started with meditation. 

We need oxygen to function and through deep breathing more oxygen enters our blood. Without it, neurons degenerate and die.

Many meditations use the breath as a point of focus. This is because when we focus on something other than what we are thinking about, the original thought tends to fade away.  

The simplicity of this fact is actually incredible once we really realize what refocusing the mind can do.
3. Being Creative While You Sleep

What better way to get more things done but to use your sleeping time to be creative. Without a good night’s sleep, our efficiency will drop the next day.  To help improve your sleep it is helpful to meditate as well.  

If there is something troubling you in business, just write down a question on a scrap of paper and put it under your pillow before sleeping and you will find you either dream up the answer or awake with it the next day.

4. Getting In The Zone

Once you have meditated every morning for one or two weeks, you will find it easier to maintain the meditative state with your eyes open.

When you do this, you will find two things happen.

  • Firstly, time takes on an ethereal quality and you will discover your tasks get done within the time you have available.
  • Secondly, you become better able to maintain your focus as you reduce interruptions from what is known as your ‘monkey mind’, which has that tendency to wander of its own accord.

5. Just in Time

After only a few weeks of regular meditation, you will find you get more done with less time.

At the same time, as your mind is less busy, you become better noticing signs, serendipities and coincidences around you. Such opportunities are always there but can bypass a self-absorbed mind.

In essence, you become luckier and find that you only have to think of something you could do with one day and it seems to turn up, like magic, the next day.

So with these simple techniques, there is no need to travel to an ashram for a silent retreat for two weeks, however lovely that may be.   

We already have access to a meditation teacher in our pockets through our smartphones.  It is all there waiting for us!

Invest just 10 minutes a day in meditation and watch how your days change, and eventually your approach problems in your business and your life.
