Let me tell you about a friend of mine.
He had a 9-5 job. He didn’t love it.
He would get up early, switch on the radio to listen to the news.
He would have his breakfast, get ready and then head out the door. On the way to the station he would grab a newspaper which he then read on the train.
When he got to work he would chat to his colleagues about what he’d learnt from his paper and heard on the radio that morning.
At the end of the day he would leave the office, grabbing another newspaper and again read it on the train home.
Back at home he ate his dinner whilst watching the nightly news and then finally head to bed where he would sleep until the alarm went off to start another day and the same routine over again.
He’s a good guy and I’ve known him for years but his favourite topic was complaining on a wide subject of things.
He didn’t like his job or his circumstances and couldn’t see a way out.
His Facebook posts were ones of complaining, moaning, bitching about this and that. Petty trivial stuff too.
Does this person sound familiar?
Some find it hard to believe, but it’s true.
I was polluting my mind with negative news from the media and this was affecting my mindset.
About 12 years ago I was driving my 2 young children to their school and the news came on the radio where a young girl had been raped and killed.
My young son piped up from the back of the car ‘Dad, what does rape mean?’ I was shocked, horrified and found it hard to describe what it meant without upsetting him. I decided from that day on that I would not listen to the news or read it.
Fast forward to today and I still don’t listen or read the news and for the past 9 years I’ve worked for myself and live a very happy life doing exactly what I want to do and I have to say my mind is clean because I’m very careful what I listen to, watch or read and also who I surround myself with.
My whole life changed because my attitude was different.
Now I don’t live in cloud positivity cuckoo land I am a realist but, cutting out all the negativity was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
“If you want to put out good in the world, you’ve got to limit the bad going in.”
Now let’s just go back to the radio news for a moment. What can I or you personally do about something as horrific of a young girl being murdered?
Nothing is the answer.
Bad news sells and the journalists love it. The more horrific the more they hype it up to sell more and cause more fear and angst in the world.
All you and I can do is help those in our family, friends and local community.
By switching off you won’t lose touch. If there is something that you need to know, you will find out. Unless you live under a rock and don’t use social media, you will find out.
Trust me on this. Cutting out these negative elements of your life WILL MAKE A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE.
When you start feeling happier, life becomes happier and from that place you can see the possibilities.
What do you do to stay positive or avoid negativity in your life?
Let me know how you keep a smile on your face.
In the next blog I will be talking about where true success starts from, and it’s nothing to do with money or things.
