The Treachery of Religion: No. 8 by 'H'

Acrylic and eco-solvent based paint on canvas - 100cm x 75cm

For this piece I was instantly moved, as many other artists and designers were, by the shocking events of the Charley Hebdo attack in Paris.

A gunman armed with an automatic rifle attacked the offices of the satirical French magazine, killing 12.

For simply illustrating Mohamed in a way that was unliked by these few extremist, they felt that a fair retribution was to kill.

Having always loved and admired the work by the artist Rene Magritte, my instant thought went to the image of the “Treachery of Images” depicting a pipe with the inscription in French below claiming “this is not a pipe” where Magritte claims how can it be a pipe, it is just a painting of a pipe, you can’t stuff it with tobacco!

As with this I felt that these artists were using their pencils and pens to crate these images and not raising up arms to attack these few extremists.

Hence the idea that “This is not a Rifle” (“ceci n’est pa un fusil”).
