People are creatures of routine, but this often leads to boredom.
In business, however, some routines and rituals are motivating and exciting.
They get the adrenaline flowing and make you ready to either take on the day or keep going until the day is done.
While each type of business has some that are unique to its category, many of them are universal or can easily be adapted.
Here are some of the most effective:
Checking the Business Newspaper
There's something thrilling about checking up on what's going on in the business world and seeing if any of it will affect your industry.
Reading a paper, or a book that speaks to the challenges you are facing now, instead of watching the TV, lets you choose your focus and allows you to take in the information at a comfortable pace.
A good paper also gives you an in-depth view of what the true giants of business are doing – and it can be lucrative to implement some of their methods.
Make reading a daily ritual.
Checking Your Stats
There's nothing like watching your balances grow, and the easiest way to do this is to check how many sales your company has made.
This activity can be addictive, and if you do business online, you may feel like you're about to break the refresh button!
Just remember that your stats will only grow if you stop looking at them long enough to actually do something.
Otherwise, the business will stagnate. Your business statistics are the measure of what you have done and a guide to what you should do next.
I check some things like cashflow daily, and other measures also, or less, often depending on how quickly I’d need to react to adverse information.
Make strategic measurement a daily ritual.
Talking to Those Who Share Your Vision
Daily meetings are redundant in most industries, so they'll be seen as intrusive and stuffy.
Instead, chat with your key thinkers at times when you're likely to just bump into each other, such as during lunch or breaks.
Exchanging comments about the latest events, ongoing projects, or what's going on with various customers will give you a chance to pass ideas to each other without the pressure that accompanies a meeting.
Remember that you can get great ideas from people of any rank, so be sure to avoid the appearance of a closed clique as you stand and chat.
Sharing your vision regularly and widely will help to give everyone clarity about your aims and ambitions. When they have that clarity they will support you achieving it.
Make sharing a daily ritual.
There are many other rituals of business, such as checking emails, but is that motivating and exciting?
Be sure to have daily rituals that lift you, that raise your performance, that drive success, so that you have something to look forward to every time you wake up.
