The Implementer – Change Leader?

Implementers are at their best when they’re delivering the changes others have envisioned, they have an incredible drive once the way ahead is clear and the outcomes tangible.

The Implementers are action focused and love solving the problems that inevitably pop-up in the process of making change happen.

Their approach is pragmatic and practical and their dependability creates great levels of confidence in the teams around them.

The biggest challenges arise for Implementers when the way ahead is unclear or they feel like they are operating in an ambiguous environment.

Not knowing how things “should” be done or feeling like their efforts are unstructured and of intangible value is incredibly demoralising for Implementers.

In such circumstances, their determination to get things done can be misaligned if they are not working with a Strategist or of questionable value if they are not working with a Polisher.

The good news is that even the slightest adjustments result in immediate activity and reliable delivery of whatever is required for the benefits to be realised.

The role of the Implementer looks like it is just hard work to the casual observer, but it is often mercurial as they fashion results from imperfect instructions.

Indeed, their special skill is to get things done, even under pressure and often demonstrating great resilience in the face of setbacks.

Being a top Implementer is about effective planning, efficient working and pragmatic delivery.

Understanding the true value of Pareto’s 80:20 rule and utilising a host of project management techniques and tools elevates their skills to an expert level.

When leading change, the Implementer is the personification of someone leading by example.

Never afraid to roll-up their sleeves and get stuck in.

A key thing to watch out for is the tendency to operate in isolation when the Implementer is hurtling at 100 miles per hour towards their goals.

Delegation and coaching others to develop their skills are two key areas to build into plans to force more collaborative working.
