The new calendar year is always a time when we can think about what we have done in the past, what we want to do in the future and what we need to do now ro make the next year extraordinary.
When I work with my clients, we often review and amend our direction a little, so that we remain focussed on the main goal. Even if you do this regularly yourselves there are times when a more detailed analysis of your direction is useful.
When mentoring and working with my clients in this way, I first ask - Why?
Our aim is to do better, and for next year to be the “best”.
But to begin with, we first have to answer the question
“What would ‘best’ mean to you?” Is it about more money, more time or less stress?
This is important because each area requires a different strategic aim.
Consider why have you chosen those areas, and do they matter to others?
In answering that question you will need to consider the challenges you have faced, and how you overcame them. You will need clarity on the issues that remain unresolved, and you will need to identify all the opportunities you could pursue.
Then Ask - What do I need to change?
If 2018 is going to be different from 2017 (and if it is to be your “best” it has to be different) then some things will have to change. Some are your responsibility, some you cannot control. I recommend deciding:
What you will start to do that you currently don’t?
What you will do more of than you are currently doing?
What you will leave the same?
What will you do less of?
What will you stop?
Of course if you have lots of things in 1 and 2 and few in 3 and 4 you are either going to be busier, or worse, you’ll fail to hit your goals!
Then Ask - How?
Now it is time to plan, and work out when work needs to be done, taking account of the resources you have and the commitments you have made. Plans don’t deliver results, but planning does.
The process lets you see the order of things. At every stage ask whether the planned work is making success more likely, if it is great, if not, well, you know what to do.
Finally - Stay accountable.
All of this won’t make success happen unless you do the work, and keep monitoring and keep planning as things change around you.
A mentor, that knows your plan, and will hold you accountable for delivering it can be invaluable. Be honest, tell your mentor what would be extraordinary success and get them to hold you to delivering it.
Stay in focus, act on purpose and 2018 will be the best year ever.
